After graduating with a diploma in audio technology, it suprises people I don’t have more audio work to show. Since I left school, I have focused on audio programming, both for internet, and applications. Currently, I’m developing a line of plug-ins (software instruments) and hope to launch them within a year. One thing that concerns me, web-wise, is the domainance of Flash to cache audio. The new generation of browsers have better support for Javascript and other technologies; my goal is to build features without Flash to use audio in distinctive and entertaining ways.
On my blog, I’ll soon be publishing a series of tutorials on building sampler instruments in Logic 8. All of my composition projects in school included custom sounds and sampler instruments, and I want to encourage others to get into the system and build from scratch. Here’s a few examples of work I recorded while still in school.
Bugs
This is a short clip of my final project at SAE. The work has since been released by French netlabel Le Ptite Maison as part of a compilation of sound art inspired by insects. Its available for free download, along with many other crickets. Special thanks to Barbosa, who played guitars, and the vocalists.
A Good Wife, Who Can Find?
Another spoken word piece I did while at SAE. This work contrasts the old testament verse with modern musings on gender and roles. Featuring several custom sounds, including the Kitchenwitch, a sampler instrument made by tapping objects in my kitchen, and Cremant d'alsace, a sampled keyboard made from an empty wine bottle.
An Experiment in the 10th Century
This is clip from a film score assignment. It's correctly scored so that it could be performed live in a studio using just six musicians. I composed for historically accurate instrumentation, used a tuning typical for a lyre, and made a custom sampled ocarina.
Reggae Track
Meadowlark Rock is a band I tracked with Chris Choi for his final. Check out their my space page or contact them at rarenas@volcom.com. Chris was also the mix engineer on this piece, contact me for his email. He’s a great mixer.
